LRH Hospice's Janet Wackerbarth Receives Award
Janet Wackerbarth, Registered Nurse at Lakes Regional Healthcare (LRH) Hospice, was awarded the Medical Professional of the Year award at the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life event on Saturday evening.
Nominees for the award were submitted by either a cancer survivor or their family. Wackerbarth was nominated by a hospice patient’s family. According to Relay for Life Co-Chair Di Hirt, “Nominations were based on an individual’s healthcare professionalism while providing services. We had several nominations, and Wackerbarth won the award because her nomination letter really described how great she is at providing care to hospice patients. She really deserves congratulations on a job well done.”
LRH Director of Community Health Micki Kohorst said, “Janet is the Team Leader at Lakes Regional Healthcare Hospice and is responsible for making home visits and coordinating the patient’s plan of care with other team members. Her nomination and award demonstrates her commitment to personal and professional excellence, and contributes to the high quality care patients receive at Lakes Regional Healthcare Hospice.”
Lakes Regional Healthcare Hospice has been providing hospice services locally for terminally ill patients and their families for approximately eight years and is the only hospice in Dickinson County that is affiliated with Lakes Regional Healthcare.
Hospice is a special kind of care that concentrates on care, not cure, for patients of all ages and with various types of illnesses. It is designed to provide sensitivity and support for people in the final phase of a terminal illness. The goal for the patient is for the last days to be spent with dignity and quality at home or in a home-like setting. Lakes Regional Healthcare Hospice strives to meet all of the patient’s needs – medical, physical, emotional, social, and spiritual – as well as the needs of the family. A team of professionals and volunteers provide services ranging from high tech nursing and medical care to basic assistance with the activities of daily living and bereavement counseling for the hospice patient and their family.
