Dr. Don Rodawig Medical Director of LRH Hospice

Donald Rodawig, Jr., M.D., began his tenure as Lakes Regional Healthcare (LRH) Hospice Medical Director May 1, 2008.

Rodawig evaluates and coordinates patients’ plans of care. He describes his approach to providing patient care as comprehensive. He said, “Hospice truly requires a team approach to providing care, as I work with not only the patient through this transition, but with the family, along with the help of numerous caregivers including nurses, pastors, social workers, and volunteers.”

Rodawig grew up in Spirit Lake, received his medical degree from the University of Iowa, and practiced medicine full-time at Spirit Lake Medical Center for over 30 years and part-time locally and regionally since 1991. He said, “I’ve been providing medical care for about 50 years, most of which has been provided locally. It’s great to be a part of people’s lives in the way that I have, and I look forward to continuing that care through hospice.”

Lakes Regional Healthcare Hospice has been providing hospice services locally for terminally ill patients and their families for approximately eight years and is the only hospice in Dickinson County that is affiliated with Lakes Regional Healthcare.

Hospice is a special kind of care that concentrates on care, not cure, for patients of all ages and with various types of illnesses. It is designed to provide sensitivity and support for people in the final phase of a terminal illness. The goal for the patient is for the last days to be spent with dignity and quality at home or in a home-like setting. Lakes Regional Healthcare Hospice strives to meet all of the patient’s needs – medical, physical, emotional, social, and spiritual – as well as the needs of the family. A team of professionals and volunteers provide services ranging from high tech nursing and medical care to basic assistance with the activities of daily living and bereavement counseling for the hospice patient and their family.
