Spine Surgeon Joins Team at NW Iowa Bone & Joint
Spine and orthopaedic surgeon Dr. William “Will” Shaffer has joined Northwest Iowa Bone, Joint & Sports Surgeons PC., bringing to the region expertise in surgical back and neck care. Dr. Shaffer will hold clinics in Spirit Lake, Spencer, and Storm Lake.
Dr. Shaffer and his wife Rebecca are relocating to northwest Iowa after spending the past nine years in Kentucky. Rebecca is an Iowa native who grew up in Marion, located next to Cedar Rapids, and attended the University of Iowa, as did Dr. Shaffer. Dr. Shaffer grew up in a military family, spending his childhood in various locations across the country, so due to his wife’s family ties, Iowa feels like home to him. Rebecca’s parents live in Cedar Rapids and she has a sister residing in Des Moines.
“We always wanted to come back to Iowa,” Dr. Shaffer said. “It was time to come home.”
Dr. Shaffer, who brings 22 years of spine experience and 30 years of general orthopaedic surgery experience to the practice, is looking forward to a simpler lifestyle than he is leaving behind in Kentucky. For the past nine years, Dr. Shaffer has served as Director of Spine and Total Joint Services and Professor Vice-Chairman and Othopaedic Residency Program Director at the University of Kentucky. In doing so, Dr. Shaffer performed an extensive number of trauma procedures and complex spine surgeries. In northwest Iowa, he anticipates his workload will be a little less hectic, yet still a fun challenge as he builds his practice here.
Dr. Shaffer completed his undergraduate degree and earned his doctorate in medicine from the University of Michigan. He completed his orthopaedic residency at the Orthopaedic Surgery Naval Hospital and also completed a fellowship in Spine Surgery at the University of Iowa. Dr. Shaffer was at St. Louis University prior to relocating to the University of Kentucky.
Dr. Shaffer and his wife have two adult children; Jodi and her family live in Denver, CO, while James resides in Kentucky.
