LRH to Hold Cancer Walk for Hope June 5
Nearly 16,000 Iowans are diagnosed with cancer each year. The emotional and physical turmoil the disease causes is devastating and costly. Lakes Regional Healthcare (LRH) and the American Cancer Society (ACS), in recognition of National Cancer Survivors Day and in honor of those that have survived and are currently battling cancer, are hosting a Cancer Walk for Hope event on Saturday, June 5.
The event will be held on the Dickinson County Courthouse lawn from 1:00 until 4:00. Pre-registration tee shirt pick-ups and on-site registration will occur from 12:00 until 1:00. It will then kick off with an opening ceremony at 1:00 with keynote speaker Dana Kauffman, who is the local ACS representative and breast cancer survivor. It will follow with a survivor roll call where survivors in attendance will be presented with Certificates of Honor for their strength and courage. There will also be a remembrance roll call to remember those that have passed away from the disease.
The walk itself will begin at approximately 1:30 at the Dickinson County Courthouse lawn, go north on Hill Avenue to Gilbert Park and back. Individuals of all ages are welcome to participate. It is not a race or a competition, so walkers can take as long as is needed to finish, or walk as far as they are able. The Mainsail-a-bration is that day, so walkers will be able to enjoy those festivities as they walk through downtown. Upon returning to the Courthouse lawn, there will be tables set up with prevention, detection, and treatment information. LRH’s Physical Therapy staff will provide five-minute massages for those that pre-register by May 20. Videos of survivors sharing their stories and how they coped with their cancer diagnosis will be shown continuously. Although the walk itself will officially begin at approximately 1:30, people can come and go to the event as they please.
Pre-registration to attend the event will cost $10. Those that register by May 20 will receive an event tee shirt, tree seedling donated by Ferguson’s Landscape, a goody bag, a five-minute massage, and a Certificate of Honor (if a cancer survivor). Those that register between May 21 and the day of the event will receive an event tee shirt while quantities last and a Certificate of Honor (if a cancer survivor). Although event tee shirts can be picked up the day of the walk, participants are encouraged to wear their shirt during the walk. Therefore, pre-registrants can also pick up their event tee shirts on Friday, June 4 from 3:00 until 6:00 pm inside LRH’s west ER entrance.
Those interested in participating in this event are encouraged to complete a registration form located at www.lakeshealth.org (in the Events section) or at the east and west entrances of Lakes Regional Healthcare or to call 336-8799.
