Oncology on Canvas Art Exhibit on Display at LRH

Lilly Oncology on Canvas, an art exhibition honoring the journeys people face when confronted by a cancer diagnosis, will be on display at Lakes Regional Healthcare (LRH) from May 6 through May 10. This free public exhibit, which is touring communities nationwide, will showcase 25 select pieces of art from the 2010 Lilly Oncology on Canvas competition. They will be displayed in LRH’s Oncology Department, Cafeteria, and visitor’s entrance.

LRH Vice President of Nursing Joni Mitchell said, “We are happy to showcase this artwork. Each piece will have its own story about the artist and how their artwork relates to their cancer journey. I think people will enjoy seeing them and find they can relate to them in a meaningful way.”

Launched in 2004, the exhibition is now showcasing artwork from its 2010 competition. This biennial art competition invites people from the United States and Puerto Rico diagnosed with any type of cancer – as well as their families, friends, caregivers and healthcare providers – to express, through art and narrative, the life-affirming changes that give their cancer journeys meaning. The themes explored in the entries submitted to the competition ranged from hope, to fear, to the loss of individualism, to the support of family and friends, to the memory of those lost, and to the perseverance of those who survive.

LRH’s Oncology Department will also have a special coffee and time of reflection for anyone touched by cancer within the community on Monday, May 9 from 4:00 until 6:00 pm in the hospital’s cafeteria. Along with viewing the Lilly Oncology on Canvas artwork, those in attendance can visit with LRH oncology staff and others. Mitchell said, “Cancer, unfortunately, touches many, many people. It’s never an easy thing to go through, but it is nice to be able to share stories of hope and encouragement with others. It strengthens us all, and that’s what we hope this art exhibition and time of reflection will do.”
