Steven Vander Leest, DO, Joins Avera Medical Group Lakes Family Practice
Steven Vander Leest, D.O., a new family practice physician at Avera Medical Group Lakes Family Practice, started seeing patients on February 2.
Dr. Vander Leest, along with his wife Tarra, recently moved to the lakes region from Sheldon where he was a family physician with Sanford Clinic Sheldon. Before that, he received his medical degree from Des Moines University and completed his residency in Sioux City. He is a member of the American Academy of Family Physicians, American Board of Family Medicine, Christian Medical and Dental Associations, American Medical Association, American Osteopathic Association, Iowa Academy of Family Physicians, the Iowa Osteopathic Medical Association, and the Iowa Medical Society.
Dr. Vander Leest joins physicians Steven C. Carlson, DO; Thomas F. Kalkhoff, DO; and Timothy J. Taylor, DO at Avera Medical Group Lakes Family Practice. Dr. Vander Leest will provide family medical care to patients of all ages, including obstetrical care and, when necessary, admit and see patients at Lakes Regional Healthcare. He describes his approach to providing patient care as thorough and compassionate. He said, “I like caring for people of all ages, helping them through their life changes, including exciting times like the birth of a new child or the somewhat difficult times experienced during the aging process.”
When Dr. Vander Leest is not caring for patients, he enjoys being with his wife, Tarra, and their two daughters, Aliza and Isabelle. He said, “We are very active in church and leading youth group activities and also enjoy the occasional football game.” Dr. Vander Leest is originally from Waterloo and his wife is originally from Spirit Lake. Tarra is an optometrist and will be working at Optique in the Great Lakes Mall. He said, “We’re excited to be here - anxious to get involved in the community, be around family more, and establish roots here.”
