Speech therapy, a service at Lakes Regional Community Health Center, allows area patients to recover and learn to communicate after a stroke or accident.
Speech therapy involves assessing a patientís communication abilities and difficulties, and then implementing appropriate goals and methods to improve their communication. This may include instructing the patient how to read, write, speak, and swallow again. Depending on the patientís needs and abilities, patients usually receive speech therapy two to five times each week for several months.
A physicianís referral is necessary to receive speech therapy.
