Lakes Regional Healthcare’s outpatient Pulmonary Rehabilitation is a program designed to help you breathe easier and improve your quality of life. It has two parts: exercise training to help you get your strength back and education to help you manage your lung condition.
You can benefit from Pulmonary Rehabilitation if you have the following:
• Chronic bronchitis
• Cystic fibrosis
• A neuromuscular disease, such as Multiple Sclerosis or Parkinson’s Disease
• Lung cancer
• A history of smoking
• Had lung surgery
Most insurance plans cover the test cost. Patients are encouraged to contact their health insurance provider regarding their plan’s coverage.
Pulmonary Rehabilitation Sessions
During Pulmonary Rehab, you first receive an extensive interview and various tests are conducted. Tests may include:
• Pulmonary Function Test (PFT)
• Six minute walk test
• Simple physical assessment
After a customized exercise program is tailored to meet your needs, you may meet with other Pulmonary Rehab patients for two hours twice a week. The sessions last eight to twelve weeks. Both you and your family may participate.
At each session, you exercise according to your personalized care plan. Staff monitor your heart rate, blood pressure, how much oxygen is getting into the blood, and your perceived exertion and shortness of breath.
During the sessions you may also receive lectures from hospital personnel on a variety of topics related to your program. Upon completion of the program, a home based exercise program is set up so you can continue to maintain progress and healthy living habits.
Because each session may include exercise, you are encouraged to wear comfortable fitting clothing and shoes you can walk in.
